Dear Jared,
My niece is slightly asthmatic and prone to breathing problems. Her parents don't want her near my pet dog, but my niece loves animals and always wants to play with my dog whenever she visits. She hasn't had any asthma attacks or serious problems so far, and I just don't have the heart to say, "No." What should I do?
Pet-loving Auntie
Hi Pet-loving Auntie,
First of all, I completely know how you feel. When my niece or nephew want/like anything, I need them to have it immediately! It's nearly impossible to say, "No." However, I always have to remember that their parents make the rules, and if they say, "No," to something, I have to respect their decision.
So, the most responsible advice I can give you today is to default to your niece's parents’ wishes regarding your dog. (Totally sucks, I know.) Perhaps, over time, she will outgrow her asthma and they will warm up to the idea of her having a dog of her own.
Good luck!
Love,
Jmw
